I chose to redesign this lesson plan because it is something that is typically found in most classrooms across theUnited Statesand is something could be used or done at any grade level. Often time in classrooms teachers rely on films as a way for their students to receive a visual on many of the things they discuss within a lesson or unit. However, in many cases teachers do not take full advantage of the different things that you can do and include with a film by incorporating the current web and presentation tools that are available.
Following a study of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, students will then discuss particular points of the text (i.e. setting, characters, protagonist, antagonist, etc...) that are important. Students will relate information from text learned and discussed to that of the film A Time to Kill. It is important that students be able to demonstrate comprehension of literary texts in order to complete the lesson in its entirety (background knowledge). As Karen Tankersley states, “We don’t comprehend unless we draw connections between what we read and background knowledge. Words have to be processed at the thinking level before comprehension can take place.”
The goals of the original lesson plan entitled, “With Justice for All”, were for students to do the following: 1) Compare and contrast trial elements from both mediums with regard to internal and external conflicts that the characters had. 2) Recognize and identify examples of prejudice in both the fiction text and film. 3) Identify similarities and differences between each trial. Finally, 4) Identify cultural factors that influenced each verdict.
Lesson Plan Redesign Goals
The new goals for this lesson are for students to be able to do the following: 1) Compare and contrast trial elements from both films with regard to internal and external conflicts that the characters had. 2) Recognize and identify examples of prejudice in both films. 3) Identify similarities and differences between each trial and how cultural factors influenced each verdict. 4) Successfully complete the 4 question quiz included in the lesson plan.
Web Tools
I have chosen the following tools to incorporate into my lesson plan to improve the overall participation with my students as well as use of technology:
1)YouTube
2) TubeChop
3)ProProfsQuizSchool
Why I chose these Tools
I chose the following tools because I felt that they were tools that could be used in any subject and would aid teachers with trying to convey a message or knowledge to their students using technology. These tools were things that I was not aware of prior to this assignment and plan to incorporate into my repertoire as a future educator.
Standards
I am using the following standards from the ISTE NETS and Performance Indicators for Teacher (NETS*T)
1) Facilitate and Inspire student learning and creativity
c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to revel and clarify students conceptual understanding and thinking, planning and creative processes.
2) Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.
c. Customize and personalize learning activities address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools, and resources
d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data inform learning and teaching.
3) Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.
c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats
d. Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.
Teacher Improvement
I feel that this will improve my teaching because it will enable to me to have complete control over what information I want my students to take away from the films as well as embed messages into the film that they can see while watching. It allows me to have that control that many teachers want over what is viewed in the classroom that sometimes may not get through other venues. Being able to use web tools such as Tubechop and ProProfs for Schools allows me to transition my classrooms into the technology era and incorporate elements (tools) that my students are familiar with and can appreciate.
Student Improvement
I feel that this will improve student learning because it takes elements that they are familiar with in a traditional medium (text) and allows to now visually through the use of technology take many of the words and scenes from books and see what they can look like. Often times through film we are able to grasp many of the emotions that the characters are attempting to convey better because we feel we are living it with them. Technology is able to do that for students and that’s why it is important and improves their learning.
